Target Areas:

Angelito project focuses its efforts in the areas selected by Healthy People 2010 to eliminate health disparities in health access and outcomes:

  • Infant Mortality
  • Cancer Screening and Management
  • Cardiovascular Disease
  • Diabetes
  • HIV Infection/AIDS
  • Immunizations

Specific Objectives

Angelito Project is designed in three key components:

Promote Preventive Healthcare For Hispanic Children
Healthy Family Component
Complementary component: Hispanic Culture Promotion

Promote Preventive Healthcare for Hispanic Children.

Specific Objectives:

1. Distribution of preventive healthcare information and related literature.
- By December 2004 distribute at least 2,000 pieces of informational material related to children preventive healthcare among the Hispanic community.
- By December 2004 design, edit and publish at least one piece of literature, i.e. newsletter, to promote preventive healthcare in Hispanic children. This publication should contain aspects and articles focused in the SC Hispanic Children Health.

Performance Indicator: Angelito project will establish a memorandum of agreement with at least two literature distribution centers in each county of the targeted area. Likewise, Angelito will distribute information and related literature in Mexican stores, restaurants, health departments, clinics and health fairs.

2. Perform Outreach activities to the Hispanic Community, such as health fairs to promote preventive healthcare, participation in community events, collaboration with other agencies, etc.
- By December 2004, perform at least one Health Fair in the counties of Newberry, Fairfield and Kershaw.
- By December 2004, establish alliances and partnerships with at least ten agencies involved in preventive healthcare for children in the focus area.
- By December 2004, perform activities to outreach at least 1,000 individuals.

Performance Indicator: Angelito project will design, plan, and perform outreach activities to promote preventive healthcare in Hispanic children in the community. The program will have the assistance of Adelante project and ContraSIDA program to develop such outreach activities. The program will also participate in the Acercamiento Hispano Day and other activities related to health issues in the target area. Angelito will establish alliances and partnerships with agencies involved in preventive healthcare for children, such alliance or partnership will be lead by a memorandum of agreement (MOA).


3. Provide interpretation and translations for activities related to preventive healthcare for Hispanic children and access to services.
- By December 2004, provide interpretation and translations services for at least 2,500 individuals in issues related to preventive healthcare for Hispanic children.

Performance Indicator: Adelante Project Staff will assist Angelito project in providing interpretations and translations for Hispanic individuals interested in preventive healthcare for Hispanic children. Adelante project has two DHEC qualified interpreters that will provide interpretations and translations. They will also provide interpretation and translation trainings for volunteers interested in provide such services for Angelito Project.

4. Provide informative and hands-on trainings for Hispanic parents related to preventive healthcare for children.
- By December 2004, perform at least one customize informative and/or hands-on training in each county of the focus area attending to their specific needs and characteristics.

Performance Indicator: Angelito Project will deliver informative and hands-on trainings for Hispanic parents related to preventive healthcare for children. The trainings will be designed, planned and implemented with the assistance of Adelante Project. Adelante has four-years of expertise outreaching the Hispanic community and providing health related services. The trainings will be customized to the specific area and segment of population.
Trainings will be focused on immunizations, prenatal care, nutrition, safety and early detections.

Healthy Family Component

Specific Objectives:

1. Distribution of preventive family healthcare information and related literature.
- By December 2004, distribute at least 1,000 pieces of informational material related to family healthcare among the Hispanic community.
- By December 2004, write and publish at least one article in the Angelito piece of literature, i.e. newsletter, to promote preventive healthcare in the Hispanic family.

Performance Indicator: Angelito project will establish a memorandum of agreement with at least two literature distribution centers in each county of the targeted area. Likewise, Angelito will distribute information and related literature in Mexican stores, restaurants, health departments, clinics and health fairs.


2. Perform Outreach activities to the Hispanic community, such as health fairs to promote preventive healthcare, participation in community events, collaboration with other agencies, etc.
- By December 2004, include a component for Hispanic healthcare in the health fairs performed by Angelito in the target counties.
- By December 2004, establish alliances and partnerships with at least 5 agencies involved in preventive healthcare for Hispanics in the focus area.
- By December 2004, perform activities to outreach at least 1,000 Hispanic parents.

Performance Indicator: Angelito project will design, plan, and perform outreach activities to promote preventive healthcare in Hispanic children in the community. The program will have the assistance of Adelante project and ContraSIDA program to develop such outreach activities. The program will also participate in the Acercamiento Hispano Day and other activities related to health issues in the target area. 3. Provide informative and hands-on trainings for Hispanic parents related to preventive family healthcare – in collaboration with ContraSIDA Program and Adelante Project.

- By December 2004, include at least one component of Hispanics Family Healthcare into the customized informative and/or hands-on training in each county of the focus area -attending to their specific needs and characteristics.
- By December 2004, coordinate with ContraSIDA Program (Against AIDS) a group presentation about HIV/AIDS and risk reduction counseling in each one of the counties in the target area.
- By December 2004, coordinate with Juventud Latina (Latin Youth) a group level presentation about an issue affecting health of Latino youngsters in the target area. I.e. Teen pregnancy, drug or alcohol abuse.

Performance Indicator: Angelito Project will deliver informative and hands-on trainings for Hispanic parents related to preventive healthcare for children. The trainings will be designed, planned and implemented with the assistance of Adelante Project and ContraSIDA program. Adelante has four years of expertise outreaching the Hispanic community and providing health related services. ContraSIDA delivers culturally and linguistic appropriate HIV/AIDS education. The trainings will be customized to the specific area and segment of population. Trainings will be focused on family health, HIV education, teen pregnancy, prenatal care and screenings for early detections.

Complementary Component: Hispanic Culture Promotion.

Specific Objectives:

-Establish partnerships with agencies interested in promoting the Hispanic Culture, such as Mexican consulates in Raleigh, NC, Atlanta, GA, and in Charleston, SC; NCLR (National Council of la Raza); embassies and consulates for Argentina, Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, etc.
-Participate in the coordination of the event Inspirarte, organized by Acercamiento Hispano de Carolina del Sur. Inspirarte promotes our Latin culture by inviting local artist to create art inspired by Latin American artists. This event also includes a component in which a contest is celebrated among middle schools, high schools and colleges under the same principle; local students create art inspired by Latin American Artists.
-Include an article about Latino culture in the Angelito Newsletter in which it explains how cultural beliefs and traditions play in preventive healthcare for Latino children and families.

Performance Indicator: Whether it is an activity developed and implemented by Angelito Program or an activity in which Angelito participates as a supportive agency, the program will keep a log of all the activities in which Latin Culture is promoted. The program will keep track of specific aspects of the Latin Culture that are being used to promote the preventive health activities in order to perform effectiveness evaluations and repetition of activities.
