Angelito project is a program of Acercamiento Hispano/ SC Hispanic Outreach

Thanks to your support our initiative has been a solid success!

We have already reached over 2,000,000 steps!

Please remember to continue using your pedometer!

If you have already reached over 99,000 steps, remember to stop using the pedometer and send it back to us, or call us so we can pick it up and add it to the total count!

It is really important that your pedometer shows the steps you have taken, so if by mistake you went over the 99,999 steps limit and your pedometer got restarted, please keep using it until you reach over 99,000 steps again. More exercise for your health!

Angelito Project truly appreciates your support for this initiative.

This page is also to provide you with some really important information related to this initiative:

THE FINAL ACTIVITY

The date to celebrate the final activity for the 3,033,000 Angels’ Steps Initiative has been changed to October 15, 2004. Originally, we had planned to join all individuals and pedometers to reach the amount of 3,033,000 steps at the SCHLHC Hispanic Community Health Fair but this activity was cancelled. Thus, we will have the final event during the Hispanic Community Festival organized by Acercamiento Hispano at the Northgate community, off Old Percival Rd, on October 15, 2004.

USE OF FUNDS RAISED

All funds collected through this initiative will be allocated to activities related to the Angelito Project. We have selected these initiatives to fund and the monies will be allocated taking in consideration the total amount of funds gathered.

I. Hispanic Preventive Healthcare Training

This initiative aims to provide a Hispanic Preventive healthcare Training to Hispanic Families in the counties of Newberry, Saluda, Fairfield, Kershaw, Richland and Lexington. The training can be provided during a Health Fair or a home visit presentation and will include the delivery of a First Aid Kit. The training will reinforce preventive healthcare knowledge and encourage the correct use of the kit.

The training is provided by Adelante Project Staff and the goal is to reach at least 50 individuals in 5 trainings.

II. Healthy Kids Living in Healthy Families Initiative

This initiative promotes the adoption of healthy behaviors within the Latino Community. In July of this year, Azucena Hipolito, member of the Parents Association of the Bill Whites Trailer Park in Newberry, approached Angelito Project with a terrific proposal. In one of their monthly meetings, the Parents Association talked about a growing concern: the time their kids spend in front of the TV. They realized that the lack of proper outdoors spaces for activities contributed to their kids staying indoors watching TV all afternoon. They decided they needed to provide a recreational area to encourage a healthy change on their children’s lifestyle. Unsure on how to go around turning this idea into reality, they approached our community liaison in Newberry County to get the help from Acercamiento Hispano. We, as an organization, are especially interested in supporting those initiatives that come from within the community. We have decided to use some of the funds raised by the 3,033,000 Angels’ Steps Initiative to purchase playground equipment and necessary implements to provide this disadvantaged community with a place where their children can play, socialize and adopt a healthier lifestyle.

Other initiatives we will allocate funds for if monies are available: “The Mexican Toys Initiative”, and the “A Thousand Angels Initiative”. Likewise, if monies are available, we could allocate more funds to provide the Hispanic Preventive Healthcare Training to a larger number of Hispanic families. In Acercamiento Hispano we strongly believe any donation made by an individual or agency to our organization implies a tacit agreement: to use those funds in the most effective way. Our 10-year expertise in outreach activities and services to the Hispanic community allows us to use the funds and donations received in a way that is both, effective and efficient.

Finally, We would like to thank all individuals for their participation in this initiative.

Please keep on taking the steps that count

and help us raise enough money to reach our goals!
