Connecting
People to Jobs (CPTJ) is a workforce development initiative
launched in the winter of 2001 by Acercamiento Hispano de Carolina
del Sur, funded by a four-year grant awarded by the Mary Reynolds
Babcock and Annie E. Casey Foundations. CPTJ aims to move low-income
Hispanic/Latino Midlands residents out of poverty and into living
wage jobs (with potential for career advancement) by connecting
them with job training, education, and support services.

Achievements
When
asked what kind of job she was looking for, Ana replied with the
stereotypical answer: “Anything.” Ana had the educational
background and working experience in accounting acquired in her
native country of Panama, but she was only able to land menial
jobs in the United States. These jobs included working in a restaurant,
a cafeteria, and a doughnut shop. Although many Hispanics come
to this country looking for whatever job is available, the main
goal at CPTJ is to assess the skills of their clients in order
to find jobs that better matches their abilities.
