On behalf of Acercamiento
Hispano de Carolina del Sur, I would like to welcome you to the
second annual InspirARTE Art Auction. This project was conceived
not only as a way to raise funds for the area’s leading nonprofit
organization in the service of Hispanics—Acercamiento Hispano
de Carolina del Sur—but also as a means to expose the community
to Latin American art.
“Inspirarte” is a Spanish word meaning, “Inspire
yourself.” “InspirARTE also incorporates the Spanish
word for art, “arte.” In the past few months, we have
invited artists and art students in Columbia to study the art of
four Latin American masters and to create works inspired by their
styles, techniques and subjects. Several months ago, school art
teachers around the Midlands began instructing students about the
four Latin American artists and their techniques. We are proud to
present the winning nine student competition pieces alongside the
works of professional artists in this event. Midlands artists and
students have inspired themselves by gaining insight into life in
the other Americas. Today they offer their work to also inspire
you.
The four artists whose influence you will see in
the silent art auction represent four corners of Latin America:
Remedios Varo (Mexico), Osvaldo Guayasamín (Ecuador), Roberto
Matta (Chile) y Tomas Sanchez (Cuba).
We would like to remind you that through your admission
fee, your auction bids, and your other generous support, you are
enabling Acercamiento Hispano de Carolina del Sur to help some of
our most vulnerable neighbors integrate into the community. The
recent rapid growth of the Hispanic community in South Carolina
has been phenomenal and the state has been slow to respond. Organizations
like Acercamiento Hispano are the first line of defense for Hispanics
in our area. Acercamiento Hispano provides services to Hispanics
in healthcare, employment, translation, legal aid and fiscal education.
A sizable portion of the proceeds from InspirARTE will directly
help individuals in need by funding the organization’s programs,
such as Adelante Project, which provides Hispanics with greater
access to healthcare, and Connecting People to Jobs, which finds
livable-wage positions for immigrants. Acercamiento Hispano also
hopes to raise enough funds to reinstate its support program for
Hispanic victims of domestic violence, in order to reach this often-isolated
group.
We are excited to bring together patrons of the
arts and all of Acercamiento Hispano’s other generous supporters
in this, the organization’s first fundraising event. We believe
that art is universal in its ability to communicate, teach and understand.
We thank you for your support, and hope that you enjoy the exposition
and take this opportunity to expand your collections, identify with
this important issue, and be inspired by art.
Sincerely,
Jack Mckenzie,
Board Director
Acercamiento Hispano de Carolina del Sur
